D&D NPC Generator
Generate rich, coherent D&D 5e NPCs with lock-and-reroll, shareable seeds, plot hooks, ability scores, personality, secrets, and Markdown export — a sharper table tool than basic random NPC generators.
Rolling up an NPC…
Need a face for the tavern, a rival with teeth, or a quest-giver who feels written — not Frankensteined from random tables? Dice Cove’s D&D NPC generator builds session-ready characters with appearance, personality (ideal / bond / flaw), voice, mannerism, goal, secret, plot hook, ability scores, and optional faith — then lets you lock what works and reroll the rest.
How to use this generator
- Set optional filters: race, gender, alignment lean, occupation type, role, and hook tone.

What you get on every NPC
- Identity — name, race, age, gender, pronouns, occupation, alignment, role tag
- Look — height, build, hair, eyes, skin, face, distinguishing detail
- Personality — traits, ideal, bond, flaw, mannerism, speaking voice
- Drama — personal goal, secret, and a DM-facing plot hook
- Mechanics — 4d6-drop-lowest style ability scores with optional racial/role skew
- Life — relationship status, orientation, and coherent public/private worship when enabled
Roles and tones
Roles bias occupation and ability lean so a “merchant” feels different from a “villain” or “comic relief.” Hook tones shift plot hooks between classic fantasy jobs, gritty street pressure, and whimsical problems — useful when you know the vibe of tonight’s session but not the face yet.
Frequently asked questions
What makes this NPC generator different?
Dice Cove’s generator builds coherent NPCs: alignment-aware ideals and faith, role-biased occupations, race-aware ages and appearances, lock-and-reroll for individual fields, reproducible seed URLs, session history with favorites, and one-click Markdown, Discord, and JSON export.
Can I keep a name and reroll everything else?
Yes. Lock any section — name, race, appearance, personality, motivation, abilities, relationships — then click Reroll unlocked. Locked fields stay; the rest regenerate from a new seed.
Are seeds shareable?
Every NPC writes its seed and filters into the page URL hash. Copy link to send a friend the exact same NPC, or bookmark favorites from your local history list.
Does this use official D&D content?
Races, classes, and deity names reference common Forgotten Realms / 5e tabletop vocabulary for DM convenience. Trait lists, hooks, and numbers are original generator content for home games — follow your table’s rules and official books for campaign lore.
Can I filter for villains, merchants, or quest givers?
Use the Role control for archetypes like quest giver, ally, rival, villain, merchant, innkeeper, official, mystic, or comic relief. Pair with alignment lean, occupation type, and hook tone (classic, gritty, or whimsical).
How should I paste NPCs into my VTT or notes?
Copy Markdown for Obsidian or Notion, Copy for Discord for a compact paste, or Copy JSON if you want structured data for custom tools. Download .md saves a named file instantly.
